  1. My recents studies of Greek mythology have allowed me to learn that each culture has its own option and beliefs on the way they live and who they look up to. For example in Greek mythology, the Greek people believed in gods and goddesses who ruled the earth whereas in West Indian mythology people believe in witchcraft and evil spirits.

  2. In the Caribbean, we learn from a young age of hair-raising stories of witches and evil spirits. These stories mainly focus on black magic and witchery. It is this type of Mythology that we hear of, and so my idea of Mythology was quite limited. However, my recent studies of Greek mythology has allowed me to have a look into a whole new world of gods, goddesses and monsters who constantly face different challenges. Now, I have a much broader and better understanding of the topic and I have learnt that there are other cultures with their own myths and beliefs. I have also learnt that different regions have different beliefs as seen with Greek Mythology and West Indian Mythology.

  3. Greek mythology has allowed me to learn of a new culture because many people who live in the Caribbean including myself, thought that the only myths that existed were the ones told in the Caribbean, but in my recent discoveries, I have learnt of many other myths particularly the ones which originated in Greece. For example I have learnt that many of the people who live in Greece often go on to write poems and novels which involve many aspects of Greek myths, one of them being Theogony by Hesiod. I have also learnt that the myths often influence the way people live in Greece which can easily be differentiated from the way we live in the Caribbean.

  4. My study of Greek Mythology has allowed me to learn about a new culture and set of new beliefs. Over the past few weeks that I have been researching this topic I have learnt that the people of Ancient Greece have very different beliefs than the people in the Caribbean. Growing up in the Caribbean I have only been exposed to things such as "soukouyan"(witches)and evil spirits. There are also things such as little myths adults may tell children in order for them to do certain tasks. In contrast, the people of Ancient Greece believed in gods and goddesses, who would look over, protect them and rule the earth. Though not all of them are on the good side, the people of ancient Greece still show respect to them by writing tales and poems about them. I have also learnt that unlike the spirits that we believe in, here in the Caribbean who do extraordinary things like take off their skins at night, the ancient Greece believed that the gods and goddesses did everyday ordinary things as humans do, like have babies and get married.

  7. In my studies of Greek mythology, I have learn that different cultures and people have a different set of beliefs. Though there are many differences, we can easily spot some similarities. We from the Caribbean believe in many folktales which may have derived from our ancestors, likewise the Greeks. How true these myths are may never be proven. However, in contrast, the Greeks are often found idolizing these Gods. They even dedicate different parts of their land after Greek Gods/ Goddesses by naming these cities after their mythological heroes. Eg. Athens, Greece, came from the Goddess Athena. Whereas in the Caribbean, our folk stories an characters are never particularly idolized. Instead, in most cases, these characters are highly feared. From the similarities and differences, I learned to appreciate other parts of the world and the diversed cultures of the earth. This has given me more knowledge on the ancient Greeks. One can even use this information to learn, study, understand and respect the people of Greece. Therefore making it easy for everyone in the world to find a common ground on which we can all relate.

  9. Greek mythology has taught me to respect and embrace other religions and beliefs. The ancient Rome had believed in many Gods, which had their own specific job to do and their own village to watch over.

  10. Throughout my studies, I was introduced to a culture which heavily featured numerous deities and furthermore gave explanations to the world around us. For instance, the people of Ancient Greece believed that a Titan named Atlas was sentenced to hold the sky upon his shoulders and that the city 'Athens' was named after the goddes Athena.

This is quite different from the West Indian mythology that I am used to. West Indian mythology is a mixture of African and Kalinago beliefs. For this reason, a lot of the myths feature evil spirits and tell tales of slavery. One of the most popular character is The Anasi Spider, whose quick-witted nature can be compared to the African's survival of slavery.

My studies has also allowed me to realize that both Greek and West Indian mythology aim to teach lessons of bravery and the consequences of our actions.

  12. My study of greek mythology has allowed me to learn a new culture. West Indian myths was first originated from our ancestors known as the caribs, we adopted what they believed so therefore i was only introduced to myths such as evil spirits, witches and wizards. In greek myths, the gods and goddesses are noted to be punished or rewarded for their actions.
I have acknowledged Gods have a special dimension which they are in charge of,example poiesdon,God of the sea or water but in the Caribbean, I was taught spirits who live in water is known as marine spirits. In the west indies the myths remains the same but in my studies I was able to know in greek mythology the gods are flexible, meaning during the period of time new gods and goddesses are added to the mythology which contains new myths. Greek myths made me acknowledge a new culture and also help me analysed the differences between greek and west Indian myths.

Man Kind ,Their Culture is different from our;they do not Believe in Modern Christianity or Judaism.

In West Indian Mythology we are accustom to our Old Folks talking about Voodou and spirits.I have learnt that these myths were created to teach and discipline children in the past,Most of them are amusing and interesting stories but are changes as the new generations comes by.

  15. As you know in most Caribbean countries different stories and myths. Studying Greek Mythology I have seen that every God and Goddess has an important role to play in our life. For example, Hades God for the Underworld (Hell). When we die God can tell us weather to follow Hades or Zeus God of the Heavens(Sky). You could also say Demeter the Goddess of Harvest. She may be the one who takes care of our nourishment.

  16. My study of Greek Mythology has exposed me to a new and rather interesting way of life of the Pre-Historic people of Greece. During my research and sharing information between my group members I have learnt several different stories (MYTHS),Gods and monuments some still standing in Greece. In the caribbean we see generations pass information to generations. Our Elders take pride and joy in sharing frightening stories and jokes about our culture. It is the norm to know about the famous witch-craft ,Obeah and the practice of evil rituals. But, things get boring after a while and so during my studies of greek Mythology i learned to appreciate and come to broader understanding of a new way of life of a people. The Gods and their super natural gifts and the stories of their life had me quite intrigued. We see that oral traditions have become written traditions of the gods and their gifts to the people and so we can even say that Greek mythology can be a religion like the religion of the Middle east Judaism.

  20. Greek mythology is very different from west indian mythology. While west indian mythology are about evil spirits and how certain things came about, greek mythology are about gods/goddesses who carry their own attributes and use them to do good or bad. After studying greek mythology, I realized how different cultures were around the world, each culture having their own stories or myths, shared by its people. It is fascinating how everyone has their own story, with different habits and adventures. For me grek mythology was very interesting.

  22. In my studies of Greek Mythology, I have learnt that different cultures have their own sets of beliefs and way of life. It is important to learn about different cultures to have a better understanding of others' way of life. Studying Greek Mythology allowed me to see the integration of a lot of symbols and arts into my own culture. These have made significant contributions. In studying Greek Mythology one similarity it has with my culture with regards to the plays/drama presentations.
Another similarity is that Greeks believed in Gods and worshiped idols. Similarly, in my culture there are traditional beliefs and rituals which has a powerful influence. For example 'Voodou'.
One difference i have learnt is that the Greeks worshiped idols and several Gods, while we worship one God. Another difference is that they had no exact records of their births whereas in my culture we have birth dates which are recorded.
The topic Greek Mythology was very interesting and is gave me a better view on life and more knowledge of different cultures.

  25. During my studies of Greek Mythology, I learnt that although both Greek mythology and West Indies myths are foretold in different ways and contains different aspects, we can say the one thing they have in common is that both are used to tell stories which teaches us about life lessons and consequences. Greek Mythology taught me about a new culture of the different people of the world. I learnt that the Greeks used gods and goddesses to teach us stories/tales about life, sometimes including little twist. Examples Zeus, Hera and Little Lo.

  26. During my studies of Greek Mythology, I have learned that the stories of Greek Mythology can relate to different cultures. For instance, we in the West Indies believe in the God of the Heavens (Jehovah),and we know of the existence of the ruler of the underworld/hell (Satan). In Greek mythology, there is a god of the heavens (Zeus) and also the ruler of the underworld/hell (Hades). Also in The West Indies we believe in the supernatural whereas in Greek Mythology, they believe in gods and goddesses with different powers. For example, Athens was named after the goddess Athena(goddess of wisdom).

  27. Personally, my studies of Greek Mythology has help me learn about a new culture for the reason that it did not just introduce me to it, but it made me understand it.

This Research Project has provided me with the opportunity to see how Mythology in total educates one on the way of life of a certain race or people along with their customs.

Their myths besides teaching worthy life lessons, they also teach us about an aspect of their life which was their religious beliefs. For instance, their mythology was actually a part of their religion which portrays the lives of the Gods and Goddesses in which they worship.

Along with that, it has shown me how Greek Mythology plays a huge role in their lifestyles, due to the valuable lessons of life they teach people. Giving them the knowledge to live life the right way.

  28. The studies of Greek mythology has given me an insight on myths besides the traditional West Indian beliefs. During these studies, I have learnt that Greek mythology concerns gods, goddesses, heroes and their powers, whereas in West Indian cultures, the folklore is more based on African deities and indigenous people. I have also learnt that different cultures have different myths and beliefs. Throughout my research, i have obtained a better understanding of the term ‘Mythology’.
